Summary: Steven has gone through countless haughty, holier-than-thou guardian angels, but he isn't prepared to fall for the next one that Heaven sends him in the form of a low-ranking trainee and cherub named Leonardo. Not only does this new angel possess the All Seeing Eyes of God, but he also has a host of sacraments at his disposal (and he's cute to boot.)

Determined, Steven schemes to keep Leo at his side for good.

Everyone has a guardian angel.

Unfortunately for God and His heavenly hosts, Steven A. Starphase blows through them like a teething pup goes through shoes. Not only is the man unrepentant about the angels that he has either strayed into the line of fire, he’s horridly ungrateful and suicidal to boot. So, when the umpteenth angel is assigned to him, it’s made certain that this is a trainee and not a professional so as not to waste yet another batch of much needed talent and expertise.

“Look out!” screams Steven’s angel with his eyes wide open and glowing an alien blue. “To the left! Your left, the tentacle – “

Steven narrowly dodges a writhing tentacle as it slams into the asphalt beside him and sunders the street in two, casting cars and citizens alike into a bottomless pit of death. He takes advantage of the momentary opening that angel just created and freezes all eight tentacles at once, sliding along the edge of one until he reaches the monster’s head at last, its weak point.

His angel, a trainee with wings too tiny to grant him any flight, ducks behind a large chunk of concrete debris for cover and shouts up at him, “At least try to dodge the hatchlings!”

Steven ignores his warning and bats them aside as they fly straight towards him, instead aiming for his true target: the gem at the center of the jellyfish’s head. Several hatchlings attach themselves to his right leg and almost paralyze him with the venom they inject into him, but Steven still manages to pull off a blade of ice sharp enough to shatter the gem beneath him.

“You…!” shrieks his angel, balling his hands into fists. “Idiot!”

Falling from the careening monster’s head, Steven’s good leg attempts to catch a fallen lamppost to slide along, but he misses and continues to free fall to the ground.

“Oof!”

His guardian angel barely catches him in time, wigs struggling as he attempts to slow their descent. They both hit the ground with an uncomfortable thud, and as they do, the hatchlings that once flew overhead also start dropping like flies due to their mother’s energy source being destroyed. A shower of blood and other gore follows as Steven’s friend and partner, Klaus, arrives just in time to finish the creature off with a bare fist to its face.

“Whew. That was a close one,” mutters Steven as he stiffly tries to sit up, not realizing that he’s lying on top of his guardian angel until he hears a muffled snort beneath him. “Oh, shit! How did you get down there, kiddo?”

Coughing, the angel indignantly crawls out from underneath his lifted leg and scrambles away from him a ‘proper’ distance. He must be a sight, he surmises, because Steven is staring at him wide-eyed and on the verge of laughing.

“Ugh. Gross,” he grunts and shakes his arms about, trying to free himself of the gore splattered onto him. “Oh, that’s it! Laugh it up!”

Steven does his best to muffle it, putting a hand over his mouth, but he can’t keep his shoulders from shaking. After a moment or two of watching his angel try to clean himself and his halo, he finally rises to his feet.

“Here,” he says and kneels by the angel. “Let me help.”

Pulling a handkerchief from the breast pocket of his suit, Steven rubs at the blood smeared across his angel’s face. Unlike the other guardians he’s had before, this angel is merely a ’cherub’ or trainee. He also possesses a rare gift, all angels are given one, and his are the All Seeing Eyes of God. Not only does this make him useful to both Steven and the organization he leads, it makes him a target of other demons and supernatural creatures.

They both have their hands full looking after each other, that is.

“Better?” Steven asks, lowering his head to catch a glimpse of the expression on his angel’s face. “Le~o?”

“I’m fine,” Leo reassures him with a huff. “You, on the other hand, have about five to ten minutes before that toxin reaches your heart. Come here.”

Smiling softly, Steven does as he’s told and scoots along the shattered pavement so that he’s kneeling square in front of Leo.

“Another sacrament wasted,” Leo scolds him with a smile threatening to tug at the corner of his mouth. “Honestly, I wish you’d be more careful.”

A gentle warmth overwhelms Steven’s battered body as Leo’s lips move and he whispers the sacrament necessary, healing him and removing the poison from his body. A few feathers fall from Leo’s small wings as a result and Steven wilts upon seeing it. Visibly exhausted from all the worry and the sacrament he just used for Steven’s benefit, Leo collapses to his knees as well.

“I’ll try to be more self-aware next time. I promise,” Steven whispers and frowns. “Forgive me?”

“Hmm…” Leo opens his eyes slightly and smirks. “I suppose I could find it in my enormous heart to, yeah. We are stuck together, after all.”

“It’s not as bad as all that, is it?” Klaus asks, interrupting them as he walks up with his own angel in tow, a seraph with large, shining wings that spark a bit of envy within Leo. “Steven isn’t the easiest person to get along with, I understand, but his intentions are for the best even if his methods are a bit destructive.”

Klaus’s angel, a high-ranking seraph by the name of Gilbert, regards Leo with a gracious bow of his head. As one of few angels tasked with protecting a human once under possession of a demon, Gilbert is renowned among the heavenly hosts as never having lost a charge yet. In all truth, Leo aspires to be like him.

Gilbert chuckles softly. “You and Steven are a lot alike, young master.”

Leo laughs at last and nods. “We both have our hands full, huh?”

“Indeed,” Gilbert agrees and smiles back at Leo. “You’re doing a fine job, though. Most of Steven’s angels have only lasted a mere fortnight, if I am to recall.”

Clearing his throat, Steven staggers to his feet and scoops Leo into his arms as he does so. He walks right past Gilbert as he adds, “They were a dime a dozen, all haughty and holier than thou. Perhaps I just needed something a little softer and less judgmental?”

“I can walk, you know,” Leo protests with a grunt.

Steven’s eyes dart down to meet Leo’s gaze and he smiles suddenly, stealing the breath from Leo’s lungs. “I won’t hear of it. Your strength is sapped because of me, so this is the least I could do.”

Leo hates the way his heart thunders within his chest. “L-Look, Casanova, I told you…”

“Angels are expressly forbidden from falling in love with humans,” Steven repeats for him and grins as he adds, “particularly their wards.”

“Do you want me to fall from grace or what?” Leo stammers at last, too tired to argue with him.

Steven’s eyebrows arch into his forehead thoughtfully. “Does that mean you’ll be earthbound?”

Jaw dropping, Leo swats at Steven’s face and shouts, “Do not get any bright ideas!”

“Me? Scheme?” Steven asks, feigning innocence. “Never.”

“Why don’t I believe you, then?” Leo mutters as Steven continues towards his car on the other side of the street. “Steven, answer me.”

Whistling as he pops open the passenger side door and safely tucks Leo within, Steven just flashes him another charismatic grin in lieu of an actual response. Those nefarious wheels are already turning and Leo can see them churning out a plan as Steven circles the car to sit in the driver’s seat.

“Just know this,” Steven tells him with a side glance and a wink. “You needn’t worry about a thing.”

Leo knows that the man wishes to keep him there for use of his Eyes and the many sacraments at his disposal, but he also secretly hopes for the fervor of Steven’s adoration, his heart, although he knows that it’s a sin to do so. He takes comfort in knowing, though, that if he does become a fallen angel and is barred from Heaven’s light for eternity, that he’ll have Steven to spend it with.

Sighing, he shakes his head and smiles back at Steven.
